EARLY TRAVELS

Early Travels

When my children were younger, we did a lot of road trips. I would locate our hotel on a paper map. No goggle or internet. Making a lot of phone calls to find a reasonably priced hotel. I had to have a pool because we traveled during summer months when school was out and everyone enjoyed swimming or playing in the water. It was time to gas up the car and hit the road. Flying was too expensive for us at the time

To keep the kids occupied on the ride we played games or named the state license plates on other vehicles or singing songs from the radio. There wasn’t a lot to do in the car during the 1970s and 1980s except to watch the cornfields. The route was either I-65, I-57 or I-55 which could get us into any state.

When the children got hungry we either had sandwiches (made prior to getting on the road) with a drink and chips, pulling into a rest stop or we stopped at a restaurant depending on the time of day.

Once at the destination everyone was excited to get out of the car since we had probably traveled from three to nine hours and wanted to stretch their bodies from being cooped up.

Sometimes the state chosen was near a local carnival, at a family reunion or an amusement park. The time we would spend any place was usually four days and back on the road for the return trip home.
